Parallel and Distributed Systems Lab (PDSL)
In the world of pervasive (a.k.a. "ubiquitous") computing, embedded computing devices are everywhere and we interact with them both directly and transparently. Further, such devices may be either fixed or mobile. Research in pervasive computing addresses such issues as service/device discovery and invocation, interoperability between devices and service composition which combines existing devices/services to create new, useful ones. Pervasive computing offers the potential for increased interaction with our environments to improve our effectiveness, efficiency and enjoyment. Pervasive computing provides an extremely challenging form of distributed system where device heterogeneity and autonomy are high but devices still must be widely sharable on demand.
Specific sub-areas of interest
Pervasive Computing is a relatively new area within the PDSL. There are three areas of research within pervasive computing being explored as part of a collaboration with TRLabs, Winnipeg. Mr. Dinesh Bhat, an MSc student supervised by Dr. Eskicioglu, is working on middleware for pervasive computing supporting interoperability between such standards as UPnP and Jini. Another MSc student supervised by Dr. Eskicioglu, Mr. Sayed Ahmed, is working on location determination using sensor networks. (He is adapting the MoteTrack software for this purpose.) Building on this work, Mr. Hossein Pourreza, a PhD student supervised by Dr. Graham, is creating a system for on-the-fly service composition which removes end users from the service composition process by automating the composition process using a repository of composite services provided by third-party "service providers".
